Leather offcuts generated during the cutting process represent a long-standing source of material waste that lacks systematic handling at the manufacturing level. Nike Grind gives leather scraps from footwear production a second use by turning them into recycled leather material. DECODED later used this material in its iPhone 13 case collection.

Native Union is a good example. Its cases use a leather alternative material containing 40% recycled content, bonded closely to a frame made from 100% recycled polycarbonate \(rPC\). This layered construction helps ensure material traceability while making full use of post-consumer plastic waste and industrially recycled polyester fibers.
To verify long-term durability, these materials undergo a 36-hour NaOH hydrolysis test that simulates three years of wear, with no cracking, flaking, or corrosion. They also pass stain resistance, colorfastness, and artificial sweat testing, with a peel strength of 3.8 kg, 38% above the industry average.

Sustainable Product Quality Control
Sustainable materials can respond differently during hot pressing, lamination, stitching, bending, and daily use. Common risks include delamination, cracking, color transfer, edge wear, and surface damage.
Before mass production, Champion validates the approved sample through product-specific testing. Depending on the construction, this may include peel strength, RCA abrasion, flex resistance, colorfastness, heat resistance, sweat resistance, and dimensional stability.
During production, IPQC sampling and laboratory checks are used to monitor critical quality points and batch consistency. This helps identify performance risks before shipment and maintain reliable quality throughout regular use.
